VPK vs. Daycare: What's the Difference (and Do You Need Both)?

Parents in Apopka often ask us whether VPK replaces daycare. The short answer is no — they serve different purposes. Florida's Voluntary Prekindergarten program covers part of the day with free, kindergarten-readiness instruction, while daycare covers the full workday with supervised care. Most working families end up using both.

What VPK covers

VPK is a state-funded education program for 4-year-olds. The school-year option provides 540 instructional hours, which works out to roughly three hours a day, five days a week. Those hours are focused on early literacy, math, language, and social-emotional skills — not simply babysitting.

Because VPK is only the instructional portion of the day, it does not cover a full workday on its own. That is where extended childcare comes in.

What daycare covers

Daycare, or full-day childcare, provides supervised care before and after the VPK instructional hours. It includes meals, rest time, outdoor play, and age-appropriate activities for the remainder of the day. Unlike VPK, it is not free — families pay tuition for the care portion.

Why most families need both

A typical workday runs eight hours or more, but VPK instruction is only about three hours. To make the schedule work, most Apopka families pair the free VPK hours with wrap-around before and after care. This gives children a full day of learning and supervision while parents stay at work.
