First Day of VPK Checklist: What to Pack, What to Expect

The first day of VPK is a big milestone — for kids and parents. A little preparation goes a long way toward making the morning feel smooth and confident. Here is a practical checklist to help your family get ready.
What to pack
- A labeled backpack that is easy for small hands to open and close.
- A complete change of clothes in case of spills or accidents.
- A refillable water bottle with your child's name on it.
- A small comfort item for rest time, such as a favorite stuffed animal or blanket.
- Any required forms, immunization records, or the VPK Certificate of Eligibility.
What a typical VPK day looks like
A VPK day is structured but never rigid. Children start with circle time, move through small-group learning centers, spend time outdoors, and finish with stories and songs. The routine is designed to build early literacy, math, and social skills while keeping the day playful and predictable.
At Apopka Child Academy, our VPK classroom follows the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards with plenty of hands-on activities, outdoor play, and quiet reading time. Children know what to expect, which helps them feel secure.
Easing first-day nerves
It is completely normal for children — and parents — to feel nervous on the first day. A calm goodbye routine helps more than a long one. Tell your child when you will be back, give a quick hug, and trust the teachers to take it from there. Most children settle within a few minutes.
If your child has a hard time at drop-off, our team will comfort them and keep you updated. Consistency over the first week is the key; nerves usually fade quickly once the routine becomes familiar.
