If your child turns four before the start of the school year, Florida will pay for their prekindergarten education — but only if you apply. Every year, Apopka families miss out on free VPK seats simply because they waited too long. Here is what you need to know for the 2026 school year.

What is Florida VPK?

VPK stands for Voluntary Prekindergarten. It is Florida's free, state-funded educational program that prepares 4-year-olds for kindergarten through literacy, early math, language, and social-emotional learning. The school-year program provides 540 instructional hours — roughly 3 hours a day, 5 days a week — at no tuition cost to eligible families.

At Apopka Child Academy, VPK follows the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards with a play-based, literacy-rich curriculum. Working families can add wrap-around before and after care so the day fits a real work schedule.

Who is eligible — and the September 1 cutoff

Any Florida resident child who is 4 years old on or before September 1 of the program year qualifies for VPK. There is no income requirement — VPK is free for every eligible child. Parents may also choose to delay enrollment until their child is 5.

  • Your child must turn 4 on or before September 1 of the school year they enroll in.
  • You must be a Florida resident (proof of residency is required).
  • VPK is 100% free — there is no tuition for the VPK instructional hours.
  • Each child may use VPK once, so timing the school year matters.

How to enroll in VPK: 4 steps

Why applying early matters

VPK classrooms have limited seats. State-approved providers must hold to strict class sizes and teacher ratios, so once a class fills, families are placed on a waitlist regardless of eligibility. Applying as early as possible is the single best way to secure your preferred provider, schedule, and wrap-around care option for the 2026 school year.
